Building a sun on earth
The surface of the Sun

Rational Films was commissioned to produce Hexagon's ITER customer story

In the quiet countryside of southern France, humanity is attempting the impossible: building a star.

The ITER project (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is the most ambitious energy experiment ever undertaken. Its aim? To replicate the nuclear fusion that powers the Sun and stars, right here on Earth.

If it succeeds, ITER could transform everything

Today’s nuclear fission reactors split atoms in a chain reaction, leaving behind radioactive waste. Fusion, by contrast, fuses atoms to release energy, producing helium as a by-product – just like the Sun. If achieved, the implications are staggering: a single day of water usage could, in theory, provide energy for a person’s entire life. Beyond its immense energy potential, fusion is clean, safe, free of carbon emissions, and generates virtually no long-lived waste.

Turning theory into reality, however, is no easy feat

ITER is the largest experimental fusion reactor currently under construction. At its heart lies the Tokamak, a 29 meters high machine weighing 23,000 tons. Fusion requires temperatures of over 150 million degrees Celsius, which is ten times hotter than the Sun’s core. Containing such heat demands an extraordinarily powerful magnetic field. Precision and quality are critical to the project’s success.

Hexagon’s role

Extremely precise metrology is essential for the Tokamak’s design and assembly. Magnet alignments must be accurate to within 1 mm, and conductor interfaces to 100 microns. Hexagon provides the metrology equipment and software that ensure each component fits the final design perfectly.

Rational Films’ work

Rational Films was commissioned by Hexagon to produce a short customer story highlighting ITER and Hexagon’s role in its success. Filmed over two days at Project ITER near Marseille, France, Rational Films handled the entire production; from concept, story, and script, to motion graphics and final edit – in close collaboration with Hexagon.
